Basics: Getting Started with a Text Editor
This post is for those who are at the very beginning of their journey into web development. Many people who are just getting started spend their time learning online and working in online code editors. This is a great way to get started and I wish all these resources were available to me when I was learning! But at some point (earlier the better) the budding developer needs to start writing and running code on their own computer using a text editor.
Have you ever used a text editor? Do you know what a text editor is? If this isn't something you are familiar with, this post is for you! Well, actually, this video is for you. I could type all this up but I figured a video would work better in this case. In the video I show you the following:
- Where to get a free text editor (Atom).
- How to find it on a Mac once you have installed it, as well as how to add it to the dock.
- How and where to store your code files.
- How to add your user account in the finder sidebar.
- How to open a directory and create files in it using Atom.
- How to open up html files on your computer and run them.
- How saving files and refreshing the browser work.
I made this for those interested in attending my upcoming class at The Iron Yard in Dallas though maybe others will find it useful.
